MIC deputy president M Saravanan said the party will proceed to assemble in solidarity with Najib since many of its members have committed to volunteering for the gathering.
“However, instead of gathering at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya, MIC will hold special prayers for Najib at Batu Caves at 11am on Jan 6,” he said in a statement.
He also urged members of the community to join the prayers in seeking justice for Najib.
“I urge all Malaysians to uphold the principles of respect, unity, and fairness as we navigate these complex times,” he said.
Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that the party was ditching plans to join Monday’s rally at the Palace of Justice.
Asyraf said the party acknowledged Istana Negara’s statement, which reiterated the king’s constitutional power to grant pardons for offences committed within the federal territories.
He said Umno would abide by the king’s call to respect the royal prerogative on pardons and the established procedures.
PAS, however, has decided to press on with the planned rally.
Last Thursday, Saravanan had announced that thousands of MIC members would attend the rally in support of Najib.
Najib is currently serving a six-year prison sentence, halved by the pardons board from the initial 12 years, following his conviction in the SRC International case.
The rally will be held on the day the Court of Appeal hears his application for leave to adduce fresh evidence in his appeal to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest, an order which he claims was issued in a supplementary decree to the Federal Territories Pardons Board’s Feb 2 announcement.
People’s Progressive Party secretary-general BS Inder Singh, in a statement today, also said they have decided against attending the rally in Putrajaya. - FMT
