Mathematically Flawed Price Adjustment Need To Consume 40 Eggs To Save Rm1 20 To Bear 1 Litre Of Diesel Price Hike
SUCH is the reaction from an opposition-slant social media influencer upon finding out that the good news Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil was referring to 48 hours prior was the miniscule 3 sen downward adjustment of egg prices
This prompted lawyer Solisidtor (@Solisidtor) to come out with a series of tweets that poked fun at the egg price reduction announced by Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday (June 17).
“So, it’s 3 sen subsidy per egg. If we eat 10 eggs per week, that will work out to 40 eggs. So, 3 sen x 40 (eggs) = RM1.20 per month (diesel price is now RM3.35/litre from RM2.15 previously),” he shared his calculation on the X platform.
“Alhamdulillah I can save RM1.20 a month which can be used to cover the increase in diesel per liter Thanks PMX!”
For context, the retail price of Grade A, B and C eggs in Peninsular Malaysia has been reduced by 3 sen effective yesterday (June 17) in line with efforts of the Madani government to pass on the savings from targeted subsidies to the people.
The new prices for Grade A, B, and C eggs are now set at 42 sen, 40 sen and 38 sen per egg respectively.
On the exercise, Anwar who is also the Finance Minister noted that the subsidy provision would involve government expenditure of around RM100 mil, covering as much as 10 sen per egg. The retail prices of eggs in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan will also be streamlined according to the gazetted areas and zones.
In another tweet, Solisidtor described as “truly embarrassing” the so-called good news made kn0wn by Fahmi on Saturday (June 15) by sharing feeling on the ground by Malaysians with regard to the “3 sen egg discount”.
Elsewhere, eighth premier and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin reminded Anwar that “it’s not just eggs that have gone up in price” following the withdrawal of diesel subsidy “but “many other goods and services which includes school bus fare”.
“So, I expect the PM to announce a comprehensive mechanism to lower the price of goods. Perhaps an economic package and people’s aid worth RM4 bil which is equivalent to the amount of government expenditure savings as a result of the target subsidy (for diesel),: he pointed out in a Facebook post.
“However, what was announced was only a reduction in the price of eggs which involved a government expenditure of a mere RM100 mil. My expectations were far off the mark.” – Focus Malaysia
