Kula Wants Halimah Referred To Rights And Privileges Committee Over Mitra Funds
National unity minister Halimah Sadique promised to discuss the issue of Mitra funds with the MPs, claims PH’s M Kula Segaran. (Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition MP wants national unity minister Halimah Sadique referred to Parliament’s Rights and Privileges Committee for causing confusion over the alleged abuse of Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) funds.
M Kula Segaran.M Kula Segaran (PH-Ipoh Barat) said Halimah had told the Dewan Rakyat on Nov 17 that she would brief MPs over the disbursements of the funds, meant for the poor.
Because of that, he told Speaker Azhar Harun, the MPs did not raise the matter further “as she had promised to have another discussion with us”.
The Dewan is scheduled to adjourn sine dine today until the next session in the new year.
Halimah and opposition MPs had clashed over the alleged misuse of Mitra funds after the minister said she could not disclose any details because of the ongoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe.
The anti-graft body had said at the time that its probe into 10 companies that received grants from Mitra was “almost complete”, and that individuals involved in the case would be charged next year.
MACC also said it was investigating the case based on two aspects – the elements of the alleged wrongdoing, and improvements in the procedures and grant allocation system.
Azhar told Kula that a notice had to be submitted to refer Halimah to the Rights and Privileges Committee.
“I need to first look at the Hansard,” he said, adding that Kula could also initiate the matter with the parliamentary select committees. - FMT
