(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: As dozens of people mounted a search and rescue operation for a 20-year-old youth swept away in the floods in Temerloh, Pahang, there were two rescuers who stood out from the crowd.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and his son, the Tengku Mahkota Pahang joined the mission to find the victim at Kampung Kuala Kujan in Temerloh, Pahang today.
Istana Negara said the King and Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah were part of the 45-minute operation at 3pm today.
“This reflects the great concern His Majesty has for the people, especially the needy,” it said in a Facebook post today.
Twenty-year-old Loqman bin Hamka from Kampung Kuala Kujan is believed to have drowned after falling into the Pahang river last Friday. He had been helping his family’s fish farms when he was swept away by the water.
On the day of the incident, Loqman had left the house at 9.30am and told his father, 61-year-old Hamka Abu Bakar, that he was going to check on their fishnets.
Several hours later, Loqman’s friends told Hamka that his son’s boat had been found adrift but he was nowhere to be found.
Hamka said Loqman – the youngest of four siblings – was a good swimmer and often checked on the fishing line, besides helping him look after the cages he began working on after his retirement 12 years ago.
He was also moved by the concern of Sultan Abdullah and thanked him profusely.
Besides handing over some contributions, the King also gave words of encouragement to the family and advised them to remain patient during this difficult time.
“I am also touched that so many have come forward to help. The security forces and the villagers have been helping us. My friends are also taking turns waiting downstream in case they find him there,” he said
We have been in grief for a week because our child is still not found when I myself have helped recover over 20 drowned bodies in Sungai Pahang during my service as a policeman here. - FMT
