KELANTAN ruler Sultan Muhammad V has again made headlines after American singer Brittany Porter alleged that she unknowingly married the former Agong after what she believed was an engagement a.k.a. nikah ceremony turned out to be a legally binding Islamic marriage.
The 30-year-old California native who related her ordeal to South Chins Morning Post (SCMP) claimed that she was confused at the ceremony which took place in in Oman in April 2024 following which Sultan Muhammad V had brought along an imam and she went through a conversion without much knowledge of Islam.
Unfortunately, she came know about the truth “only months later” when her royal husband suddenly disappeared from her life ceased from contacting her.
Charmed by his “intelligent and cute British accent”, Porter who has also been revealing her side of the story gradually under Instagram handle “it’s.brook.lynn” first met the 56-year-old Kelantan ruler in New York in January 2024 through mutual friends.
Whirlwind romance turns into nightmare
Their bond developed rapidly and within months, their whirlwind romance took them on luxury trips across the Middle East and Thailand.
“He flew me and my friends all around the world. He was so generous, the nicest hotels, giving my friends the best treatment, experiences and gifts. He loves hotels, he probably spent millions on them for our trips,” recounted Potter who described herself as “Pop Princess turning pain into power”
Upon the royal couple’s return to Malaysia following their marriage, Porter said she was referred to as “Che Puan”, a courtesy title given to non-royal women married to royalty.

Along with the title came strict expectations. The relationship began to face strain over disagreements over her wardrobe, shopping expenses, and lifestyle differences.
The situation worsened after Porter suffered a miscarriage in July 2024. Following the loss, she claimed that Sultan Muhammad V stopped responding to her calls and messages. Porter said she later learned through a friend that the Sultan considered them “separated”.
Not seeking “revenge”, Porter who is “turning her heartache into music” – she has since released two singles and plans to launch an album next January – nevertheless felt that “I deserve a proper divorce, a proper apology”.
Following the end of her relationship, Porter who claimed to have felt disturbed to learn about Kelantan’s economic hardships compared to the ruler’s lavish lifestyle had apparently spent several months in therapy in the UK before returning to her music career under the stage name Brook Lynn.

Fall-out with Russian beauty queen
The unhappy ending in the Porter-Sultan Muhammad V relationship is not the first in the Kelantan ruler’s life.
It came almost six years after Sultan Muhammad V parted ways in a seemingly uncordial manner with former Miss Moscow Oxana Andreevna Voevodina (better known by her Instagram handle, Rihana Petra).
The duo’s matrimonial affairs started to sour a year into their November 2018 wedding when Tengku Ismail Leon Petra was born to the royal couple.

In August 2022 or three years after his bitter divorce, Sultan Muhammad V has apparently made his second wife, Czech Republic-born Nur Diana Petra Abdullah a.k.a. Yana Yakoubka, the Kelantan Sultanah.

Sultanah Nur Diana wedded Sultan Muhammad V in September 2010 – the year he was appointed as the Kelantan ruler and prior to assuming the role of deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong the following year.
The Kelantan ruler has married Pattani royalty Tengku Zubaidah Tengku Zorudin in 2004 but divorced her in 2008.
Recall that Sultan Muhammad abdicated from the throne in January 2019, three years before the end of his term. The unprecedented move was said to be prompted by criticism over his marriage to Oxana. –  Focus Malaysia
