PETALING JAYA: Parti Bangsa Malaysia president Larry Sng has urged Sarawak PKR to join Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) as a component party to secure its political future.
Sng, the former Sarawak PKR chairman, said he did not expect the party to be a serious contender in the next state election, particularly because Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the PKR president, needs GPS’s support at the federal level.
“He has praised Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg on every occasion and conceded to nearly every request put forth by the GPS state government,” he told FMT.
“Second, Sarawak PKR is poorly funded and has been advised not to rock the boat by their federal leaders.
“If they want to have a future in politics, their members should just join GPS. Even hardcore former PKR leaders like Baru Bian and Willie Mongin have become members of GPS components.”
Sng believes that Sarawak PKR does not need to contest in the state election in order to contribute to national politics.
Sarawak PKR earlier announced that it had decided to contest in the next state election, which must be held by April 2027.
GPS currently has a commanding 80 seats in the 82-seat legislative assembly, with DAP holding the remaining two, despite being allies at the federal level.
Sarawak PKR contested in 28 seats during the 2021 state election but failed to win even a single seat, with 22 of its candidates losing their deposits. The party had won three seats in the 2016 state election. - FMT
