PETALING JAYA: Sarawak tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says it is up to state premier Abang Johari Openg on whether he will keep his post in the state Cabinet.
He said this when asked today if losing his vice-president’s post in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) would affect his Cabinet position.
“The appointments to the Cabinet will probably be from the party but it is the prerogative of the state premier (on who is appointed).
“I don’t know (if the party polls) will affect (the Cabinet) or not. I will discuss it with him,” he told reporters at PBB’s 16th general assembly in Kuching today.
Earlier today, it was reported that Satok assemblyman Ibrahim Baki secured the highest number of votes in the elections for the post of vice-president for PBB’s Bumiputera wing in the party polls held last night.
Karim failed to defend his position, and garnered 669 votes, placing him fifth out of the six candidates vying for the four vice-presidents’ posts.
Nevertheless, he thanked the delegates who voted for him, and said he was very happy that “everything went well”.
“We have to respect the process of democracy.
“I just need to do a little post-mortem on what went wrong. But then again, that’s how the party moves,” he said.
Karim also refused to speculate on whether he will run for a leadership post in the next party elections, which is expected to be held in three or four years.
“We’ll see how it goes, whether I’m still in the party or have quit politics by then,” he said. - FMT
