Indonesia S National Themed Animation Slammed For Poor Quality And Rushed Production
INDONESIA’s latest animated release, Merah Putih: One for All, which hit cinemas on 14 August, has struggled to impress, receiving a dismal 1.0 out of 10 rating on IMDb.
Audience turnout has also been weak, just 1,500 tickets sold in the first few days, a far cry from the 1.2 mil viewers who flocked to see Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle during the same period.
The backlash online has been equally harsh. IMDb has logged 81 reviews so far, and nearly all criticise the film. One user wrote: “If I could give a zero score, I would do so without hesitation. This film completely fails to meet expectations, and even damages the image of Indonesian animation.”
Produced by Perfiki Kreasindo and directed by Endiarto and Bintang Takari, the film has been slammed for its subpar visuals, with some comparing its style to cartoons from the 1980s. Viewers also panned the story, soundtrack, and dialogue, calling them inconsistent and contrived.
Reports suggest the production was rushed, allegedly completed in under three months on a budget of about 6.7 bil rupiah (RM1.7 mil). On top of that, the project has faced claims of using unlicensed design assets for characters and locations, with speculation that parts of the dialogue were generated using AI.
Despite the controversy, the film’s premise had the potential to resonate: eight children from diverse cultural backgrounds embark on a journey to recover a lost national flag so it can be flown for Independence Day on 17 August. Along the way, they encounter wild animals, abandoned temples, storms, and other perilous obstacles. — Focus Malaysia
