Immigration Officers Under Probe After Rm1 6mil Jewellery Gold Pieces Seized

AUTHORITIES have confiscated a trove of luxury items, including 3.2 kilogrammes of jewellery valued at about RM1.6 mil and 75 gold pieces worth an estimated RM400,000, in a sweeping anti-corruption operation.
The seizures, part of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Ops Rentas in Selangor, targeted a counter setting syndicate during raids conducted last Tuesday and Thursday.
MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed that five Immigration Department officers stationed at the nation’s entry points were among those implicated.
The officers are suspected of receiving bribes in exchange for easing the entry of foreign nationals through airports.
Among the other high-value assets seized were a land lot, several BMWs, designer handbags, luxury watches, including 20 timepieces valued at roughly RM100,000, and RM20,000 in cash.
Ahmad Khusairi disclosed details of the investigation in a statement released via the commission’s official TikTok account. He also noted that 70 bank accounts linked to the suspects had been frozen, bringing the total value of seizures to around RM3.3 mil. The case is being investigated under Section 17A of the MACC Act 2009.
Earlier this week, Ops Rentas operations across four states saw 31 individuals detained, with 28 placed on remand for periods of four to seven days. Those held include 19 enforcement officers, five company owners, a company manager, and three civilians.
Among those nabbed was a husband-and-wife duo, both Immigration officers, who had allegedly funnelled illicit earnings into purchasing jewellery and even opening a gold shop in Pahang valued at RM1.4 mil.
Investigators believe the couple, both in their 40s, had been collecting bribes through the manipulation of migrant worker legalisation processes since 2020.
According to Ahmad Khusairi, the MACC will share intelligence from Ops Rentas with the Malaysian Border Control Agency (AKPS) to strengthen integrity measures.
This includes details on the syndicate’s modus operandi, risk assessments, officer profiling, and governance practices to curb further misconduct among enforcement personnel.— Focus Malaysia
