High Salary Job Ads Abroad May Be Drug Trafficking Traps

MALAYSIANS have been urged to stay alert when coming across job offers on social media that promise unusually high salaries and overseas travel.
Chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, warned that such advertisements could be traps set by drug syndicates, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated in luring unsuspecting victims through platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
He stressed that Malaysia cannot afford to lose more lives or see its citizens’ futures destroyed by these criminal networks.
“Social media is no longer just a space for leisure—it has evolved into a hunting ground for international syndicates targeting vulnerable individuals,” he said in a statement today.
Recently, reports surfaced that two couples were detained by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) at Penang International Airport as they attempted to travel to Manchester, England. The four suspects, all Malaysians in their twenties, were allegedly found with 68 packets of suspected cannabis hidden inside four suitcases weighing a total of 86 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of RM8.3 million.
Lam Thye praised the AKPS for its vigilance in curbing drug smuggling, noting that enforcement alone is not enough.
He said the agency’s swift action reflected its professionalism and dedication to shielding Malaysia from cross-border crimes.
“While enforcement plays a vital role, long-term success lies in public education and awareness. The real solution is to stop people from being deceived in the first place,” he added. — Focus Malaysia
