Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said today that his ministry is reviewing existing rules and has directed the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the Federal Territories Mufti's Office to reassess current guidelines.
"We are examining whether there are breaches of any regulations, enactments or Syariah criminal offences. Syariah action is under consideration," he told reporters after attending the 18th convocation ceremony of Kolej Profesional MAIWP at MECC.
The review follows public criticism over girl group Dolla's latest music video, Question, which drew backlash for its sexually suggestive styling.
Celebrity preacher Asma' Harun also condemned the group's appearance, calling it inappropriate for Muslim women.
Mohd Na'im said the government's scrutiny stems from repeated cases of Malay Muslim female artistes appearing in attire deemed indecent during performances or creative productions.
He said while guidelines exist, they may require updates. "There is no harm in reviewing them," he said, adding that artistes should be mindful of their influence on young fans.
"Celebrities are role models. As Muslims, we must ensure our actions lead others towards good," he said. - NST
