Heroic Dad Dives Into Sewage To Rescue Student

LAST Saturday, Muhammad Arsyad Jahaya, 35, a videographer and father of two, became an unexpected hero during a sports event at his son’s school in Seremban.
The situation turned tragic when Year Three pupil, Abdul Fattah Khairol Rizal, slipped and fell into a sewage drain.
A teacher, aware of Arsyad’s swimming ability, rushed to him for help. Though initially hesitant because of the water’s depth and the foul conditions, Arsyad pressed on after witnesses confirmed that the boy had indeed fallen in.
“At first the water looked calm, as though nothing had happened,” he explained to Sinar Harian.
“I wasn’t afraid of going down, but I worried I might be misled, since it was a sewage pit. Once it was confirmed, I knew I had to act,” he added.
Fearing the Fire and Rescue Department would take too long to reach the site, he made the split-second decision to dive in himself.
The water, he said, was over 1.8 metres deep, already at neck level before his feet could even touch the bottom.
“It was as if I was lifting a piece of paper. So light, unlike carrying a person,” recalled Arsyad, describing the heartbreaking moment he pulled the lifeless child from the sewage hole.
Arsyad’s swift response, though harrowing, prevented further delay in the desperate rescue attempt, marking him as a quiet but courageous figure in a devastating episode. — Focus Malaysia
