Hadi schooled on ‘decorum’ after saying Umno leaders back MN
An Umno leader has ticked off Abdul Hadi Awang after the PAS president claimed that most of the Malay party’s top guns supported Muafakat Nasional (MN), the pact between the two parties.
Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said Hadi’s remarks were “not appropriate”.
“It would be inappropriate for me to teach PAS leaders about their internal matters. Likewise, I hope the PAS leadership will also respect the decorum between parties and avoid speaking on behalf of Umno.”
Earlier today, Utusan Malaysia reported Hadi as claiming that most Umno Supreme Council members backed MN and that this would result in successful seat negotiations for the next general election (GE15).
Hadi said Umno needed to listen to its top leadership rather than what its grassroots wanted.
Shahril, however, said whether or not the majority of Supreme Council members supported something was an internal matter, and what was important was the party’s final decision.
He added that Umno had never rejected MN and that the party also wanted to strengthen the pact.
“But this needs to be streamlined with our stand on rejecting cooperation with Bersatu in GE15.
“When PAS remains insistent on continuing its cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN), it puts Umno in a difficult position, to the point we have clashed,” he said, referring to the Melaka state elections where Umno was up against PAS which contested under the PN banner.
PN is led by Bersatu.
Shahril, however, said Umno respected PAS’ stand and would not force it to do something it did not want to.
“As a sign of friendship, we hope PAS too will respect Umno and not force us or spark speculation with the hope that we will do something that is difficult for us.”
This way, he said, there would still be hope to salvage what was left of their cooperation. FMT
