Government Simplifies Marriage Procedures To Prevent Muslim Couples From Using Syndicates

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said, with the move, there was no reason for couples to use the service of marriage syndicates.
He added that religious authorities are now making it easy for couples to tie the knot from the registration process to the religious officers involved.
"I want to advise couples who either are already involved in this syndicate or plan to use their services, to be cautious.
"Their marriage might not be according to syarak and is invalid if they used the service of this syndicates. Therefore, it is best for them to use the proper channels," he said when met at Pengkalan Chepa.
The Pengkalan Chepa MP said, by using the right way to get hitched, it would also ensure the couple's security.
Marzuk said the state religious departments have also been told to monitor the activities of marriage syndicates regularly despite fewer reports on their movements.
It was reported that marriage syndicates, once active along the Malaysian-Thai border in Kelantan, are now seeing a decline over the last three years.
According to Narathiwat Islamic Council vice-president Abdul Aziz Che Mamat, cases of Malaysians getting married in the area had seen a drop since early 2018.
That year, he said, the figure dropped by more than 50 per cent and the figure continued to decline in 2019.
The lack of demand from Malaysian couples over the years was due to various reasons, and some syndicates have ceased their "business" because of this.
The enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in both countries also put paid to their activities. - NST
