Ft Mufti Bill Raja Of Perlis Objects To Council Of Rulers Name Being Used
Perlis ruler Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail has expressed his disapproval in using the Council of Rulers’ name to support the Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill.
Perli mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin conveyed this through a Facebook post this morning.
“His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail has instructed me to inform that His Highness does not approve the Council of Rulers’ name being used in any efforts to support the bill,” Asri stated briefly.
On July 2, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Mohd Na'im Mokhtar tabled three bills related to Islamic affairs for the first reading in the Dewan Rakyat.
ADSThey are the Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024, the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories)(Amendment) Bill 2024, and the Syariah Court Civil Procedure (Federal Territories)(Amendment) Bill 2024.
Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul AbidinThe Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill details the establishment of a few committees including the Federal Territories Fatwa Committee, Falak Syarie (Islamic astronomy) Committee, Rukyah Hilal (sighting of the crescent moon) Committee, and the Islamic Religious Teaching Supervisory Committee.
The fourth clause of the bill defines Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah in terms of faith based on the Al-Asyairah and Al-Maturidiah schools of theology and the Imam Shafie jurisprudence while embracing three other schools of jurisprudence and the spiritual teachings of Imam Ghazali and Imam Junaid.
It also outlines the mufti’s responsibilities in assisting and advising the king concerning all matters of syariah law, the procedure for issuing fatwas, views regarding syariah law in court and determining the direction of the Qibla, Bernama reported.
ADSBe thorough
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang believes the bill needs to be thoroughly reviewed.
Marang MP Abdul Hadi AwangThis is important because there are dozens of schools of thought in Islam and no notable scholars allow their teachings to be declared as the state religion, he said.
“In my view, all scholars do not permit their school of thought to be declared as the state religion, whether it is Imam Malik, Imam Syafie, or Imam Hambali.
“Only Islam is the state religion,” he stressed after attending the International Convention for Kelantan to Develop with Islam, in Kota Bharu, last night.
Earlier, Asri reportedly said it is inappropriate for the government to pass any legislation that “shackles the people’s thinking and seizes intellectual and academic freedom in the name of religion.” - Mkini
