Pac To Launch Proceedings Against Professors Council Next Month
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will commence proceedings against the National Professors Council (NPC) on Aug 1 after the Auditor-General's Report found it had purportedly misused funds.
PAC chairperson Mas Ermieyati Samsudin also announced that the committee will hold several hearings in July.
“PAC members have discussed and unanimously agreed to initiate proceedings on the following issues - National Water Management under the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry on July 29, 2024.
“Proceedings on the Rural Water Supply Management Project in Sarawak and Sabah under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry on July 30, 2024. Proceedings on Mara Incorporated Sdn Bhd under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry on July 31, 2024.
“And proceedings on the NPC under the Prime Minister's Department on Aug 1, 2024,” she said at a press conference in Parliament today.
Abuse of funds
Earlier this month, the Auditor-General’s Department found that the NPC, a government-funded council of university professors, had misused its financial resources.
This included paying large allowances of RM207,000 to the chairperson and deputy chairperson without ministerial approval.
Auditors also found RM373,516 of NPC funds were used to cover the operations of two companies owned by members of the board of trustees.
Auditor-General Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi said the members involved did not declare their interests in those companies.
However, NPC denied the Auditor-General's Department’s findings.
Focusing on the period they did not receive government funds, NPC in a brief statement said that the federal government had dissolved the council on May 23, 2018.
Meanwhile, Mas Ermieyati said that the PAC will resume proceedings against the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) on Aug 7 following the first hearing on June 20.
“For the upcoming proceedings, PAC has decided to call the following witnesses - Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, former LTAT chairperson General (Rtd) Raja Mohamed Affandi Raha Mohamed Noor, former LTAT chief executive officer Ahmad Nazim Abd Rahman, and former senior strategy director Dayana Rogayah Omar,” she added. - Mkini
