Former Members Who Miss Umno Welcome To Attend Agm Zahid
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has welcomed any of the party’s former leaders or members to attend the upcoming Umno general assembly to be held on June 7-10 in Kuala Lumpur.
However, unlike past years where they would have been a part of the official delegates, Astro Awani quoted Zahid saying that those who “miss the party” can be present as observers.
“Whoever wishes to attend, former delegates, former Umno members who want to come, they miss the Umno general assembly, they are welcome to come.
“We hope that the 2023 AGM can be a start for us to resolve any existing issues or problems,” Zahid reportedly said during a press conference in Kapit, Sarawak, after attending a Hari Gawai open house.
Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will be a guest of honour at the Umno general assembly, alongside presidents of all 19 component parties in government.
Asyraf also quipped that former Umno leaders and members are welcome to attend as observers or even to “renew their Umno sampin (traditional Malay attire)”.
The upcoming Umno AGM will be the first since the party sacked several of its prominent members including former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, former Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar, former Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, and Arau MP Shahidan Kassim.
In what was seen as an internal purge earlier this year, Umno also suspended several other big names including former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein and former information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan.
Meanwhile, Astro Awani also quoted Zahid as confirming the attendance of Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairperson Abang Johari Openg at the opening of the Umno AGM on June 9.
Zahid said Abang Johari personally informed him of the matter during his visit to the Sarawak premier’s residence in Kuching this morning. - Mkini
