Azeem Abu Bakar, managing director of FMT Media Sdn Bhd, said it had recently come to the company’s attention that a fake article purporting to be an FMT news report had been making the rounds on social media.
Azeem said that the fake report, “Siti Nurhaliza is being sued by the Bank of Malaysia for comments she made on live broadcast”, was an attempt to deceive readers into investing in the Trade 100 Neupro platform.
The fake article as seen on Instagram and other social media carries a link to a website at live.newsmyrweekly2.com. It also carries a Bernama credit and photographs from Astro Ulagam.
Azeem said the article had falsely represented the FMT brand.
“We want to assure FMT readers that this article and the Trade 100 Neupro platform is in no way associated with our organisation,” he said in a statement today.
Azeem said FMT was working to address this issue and has reported the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
“We urge FMT readers to be vigilant and cautious when interacting with online platforms bearing our name, and to always verify the authenticity of our communications,” he said.
He apologised to readers for any confusion or concern the fake report may have caused.
This is not the first time the award winning artist was mentioned in fake reports. Other news outlets had also been linked to the fake report of Bank Negara action against Siti Nurhaliza.
In 2018, an article purportedly by one “Jack Borcott” was published on a website with the singer’s photo but identifying her as “Sita Nurhaliza”. The article, which contained the New Straits Times logo, alleged she was “being sued after using illegal information to make millions”. - FMT
