Faizal Apologises Over Miscommunication On Reopening Of Gyms
Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu has apologised to gym owners and operators over a miscommunication that gymnasiums in states under Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) are allowed to reopen from today.
The ministry will push for their reopening as soon as possible, pledged Faizal.
This came after his deputy minister, Ti Lian Ker, was quoted by The Star as saying that gymnasiums in states under Phase 2 and 3 will reopen from today (Sept 17) onward.
"I am sorry for the miscommunication. I believe the deputy minister was either misquoted or misinformed.
"We will do our best to sort this out with the Health Ministry and the National Security Council (NSC) soon," Faizal was quoted as saying by The Vibes.
Ti had later clarified his statement and assured that gym operators will be allowed to resume operations once the new standard operating procedures (SOPs) had been approved by the NSC.
“We have submitted the new SOPs to the NSC and once approved, gyms will be allowed to open,” said Ti.
In the initial report, Ti said that only fully vaccinated customers and gym employees will be allowed into the premises.
The current SOPs stated that under Phase 2, all indoor sports and recreational activities or in fitness centres, including fitness studios, are not allowed.
However, the government later announced that contact sports will be allowed at both indoor and outdoor sports facilities in states under Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the NRP, provided that the facility is monitored by staff. - Mkini
