With the rising number of errant police officers being charged in court, the All Women’s Action Society (Awam) urged the government to enhance the Independent Police Conduct Commission’s (IPCC) powers and independence.
Awam programme manager Lilian Kok said it was vital as the cases have cast doubt over the efficacy of the commission.
“We call upon relevant authorities to enhance the capabilities of the IPCC and ensure it has the necessary resources to carry out its functions effectively,” she told Malaysiakini.
Last month, a suspect died after spending four days in police custody in Langkawi, Kedah.
Also last month, a senior police officer was arrested for his alleged involvement in a car accident which killed a 17-year-old motorcyclist in Ipoh, Perak.
Before that, in November, the family of Mohd Nahar Kamsah, who died in custody at the Sungai Besar police station in Selangor, urged for the case to be investigated as a murder.
All Women's Action Society programme manager Lilian KokOn that note, Kok urged other government bodies and civil society organisations to focus their attention on rising cases of alleged police misconduct as it was “deeply concerning”.
“Instances of abuse of power and breaches of trust undermine the foundations of a just society and necessitate swift and decisive action.
“Therefore, the government must focus on a comprehensive review of current oversight mechanisms to address limitations, which had already been identified by analysts and activists,” she added. - Mkini
