Emergency Is For The Good Of All Says Azmin
Azmin Ali said whatever action the government took in suspending Parliament and proclaiming the emergency was subject to the country’s laws.PETALING JAYA: The decision to implement emergency and suspend Parliament until August is for the good of all and does not violate the constitution, Azmin Ali says.
The senior minister for economy and trade and industry minister said the government has adhered to Article 150 of the Federal Constitution pertaining to the proclamation on the emergency, and that “whatever action the government takes is subject to the constitution and the law”.
This clause gives the Yang di-Pertuan Agong the power to call for an emergency if he is satisfied that a grave threat exists, and issue additional proclamations during the period.
“Whatever action and decision is made, it is in line with the constitution and national laws and for the good of the people and the country,” he told reporters after attending a Ramadan function in his Gombak parliamentary constituency.
He was responding to a statement by Pakatan Harapan leaders saying they will submit a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, signed by MPs supporting the reopening of Parliament.
PH’s comments came at the conclusion of the coalition’s retreat in Port Dickson yesterday.
The opposition bloc said it will also seek signatures from supportive government politicians in the interest of unity.
In a joint statement endorsed by PH’s top leaders, namely PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, the party said it was important to restore the parliamentary democracy system by ending the suspension of Parliament. - FMT
