East Java Teacher Applauded For Teaching Pupils How To Iron Clothes

A PRIMARY school teacher in Kediri, East Java, has captured public attention after a video of him teaching his pupils how to iron clothes went viral on social media. The unconventional classroom activity was widely praised for encouraging independence and breaking gender stereotypes among young learners.
The clip, originally shared on TikTok by @pikipurba, shows the teacher enthusiastically demonstrating ironing techniques to both boys and girls, highlighting the importance of learning everyday life skills rather than relying on traditional gender roles.
Online users were quick to commend the idea, calling it a refreshing and practical approach to education that nurtures responsibility, self-reliance, and equality from an early age.
The teacher, 29-year-old Muchamad Viki Adi Purba, known affectionately as Piki Purba, has been teaching Islamic Religious Education at SDN Kras 2 Kediri since 2022. He explained that the ironing session was part of a broader life skills module aimed at instilling discipline and personal accountability in his pupils.
“Ironing and folding clothes may seem simple, but for young children, these activities help them learn focus, patience, and an appreciation for effort,” he told media portal Wolipop.
Although the lesson took place during a religious studies class, Piki said it also serves to strengthen his pupils’ moral and emotional development. His goal, he added, is to raise students who are not only academically capable but also equipped with essential life skills and confidence.
“Children thrive when they are trusted and given challenges. That’s when they realise their own potential. As teachers, our job is to create the space and opportunities for them to grow,” he said.— Focus Malaysia
