Don T Blame Others When Umno Losing Malay Support Saifuddin
Umno should not put the blame on others when the party is increasingly losing support from the Malays, said Bersatu supreme council member Saifuddin Abdullah.
Describing the ongoing Umno general assembly in the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) as “chaotic”, Saifuddin added that Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan’s speech at the opening of Umno’s Wanita, Youth, and Puteri wings’ annual meeting on Wednesday (Jan 11) was shameful.
“I see the general assembly this time around is a bit of a mess. It started by accusing 10 (Umno) MPs of being traitors, but no questions were asked about why there was a secret agreement between (former prime minister) Najib (Razak), (Umno president) (Ahmad) Zahid Hamidi, and (PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim before GE15 (15th general election).
“I think that’s a question that needs to be answered.
“And I think Umno members are certainly upset with the Umno deputy president’s statement who said Umno has been fighting for a long time, but support from Malays is decreasing.
“Actually, the decreasing support of the Malays has nothing to do with anyone else and it has nothing to do with DAP. It is because of Umno’s own weakness, it is a shame when the deputy president of Umno feels that he can no longer fight for the Malays,” Saifuddin (above) said at a press conference in Kuantan, Pahang, today.
Mohamad, in his speech on Wednesday, said the loss of Malay votes and the absence of non-Malay votes is a recipe for Umno’s demise.
He said Umno’s stance to support the establishment of a coalition government may help the non-Malay community rebuild its confidence in Umno.
“The support of the non-Malay community has declined drastically since the past several general elections.
“This is why, in certain circumstances, we lost, because we were unable to obtain even five percent of support from them,” Mohamad, popularly known as Tok Mat, said.
Learn from Umno’s problems
Saifuddin, who is also the Indera Mahkota MP, refused to comment further on Umno’s internal affairs as he is not a member of that party.
However, he stressed the situation in Umno was critical and that the same problem could happen to Bersatu if the leadership of the party does not learn from it.
“We see what has happened in WTC is critical because what is happening in Umno (now) could happen to us (Bersatu) if we are not careful, so we are not cheering on what is happening at WTC at the moment.”
Asked about the recent political upheaval in Sabah, Saifuddin said it proved that the parties involved are still unable to accept the GE15 results.
“We have accepted the fact that we are the opposition, we want to see political tranquillity, but what is happening in Sabah, who has not moved on?
“It seems that the person who has been harping about moving on but has yet to move on. We have moved on, we have declared that we are the opposition,” he said. - Mkini
