Debate Rages Online On Whether T20 Students Are Entitled For Scholarships
SOCIAL media users are debating who should be entitled to scholarships, arguing that students from privileged backgrounds should not accept scholarships.
Conversely, others believe that students who excel in their exams deserve scholarships regardless of their financial status.
Over the years, the public questioned why Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) student loans are offered to T20 students, despite the chairman’s claims of no favouritism.
Some Malaysians on X highlighted cases where well-off T20 students receive scholarships, while academically deserving students, like Rini Abdullah, are overlooked. MARA chairman Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun insisted eligibility is based on merit.
A recent debate on X continues with the discussion. An X user claiming to be of the T20 category fought for her scholarship. She said it allowed her to remain independent from her parents. However, some are seeing this as a privileged individual despite not knowing her personally.
Another user noted that the commenter wanted to be independent, which is why she sought a scholarship despite having affluent parents.
However, some strongly disagree with this view, arguing that those with well-off parents should rely on their parents for sponsorship.
Additionally, there were others who claimed some T20 families were doing this to save costs. While encouraging their children to receive these scholarships, the parents would allegedly then indulge themselves with the newest BMW model with the money saved.
Netizens argued that these scholarships are allocated based on the demands of specific industries. They mentioned that are scholarships available for B40 individuals. Ultimately, quotas are set for each category of students, regardless of their family background. — Focus Malaysia
