Dbkl To Question Enforcement Officers After Fracas With Vendor
DBKL said it might review its standard operating procedures to ensure that such altercations can be avoided in the future.
PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said it will obtain statements from all the enforcement officers involved in an altercation with a balloon vendor at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman last night.
DBKL said it is investigating the matter and, if necessary, will improve its standard operating procedures to ensure that such incidents can be avoided in the future.
In a statement, it said its enforcement officers discovered several unlicensed vendors conducting business activities on the pedestrian walkway along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman during a routine patrol at 11.50pm yesterday.
The vendors obstructed the public’s movement and caused congestion, especially with a large number of visitors in the area making purchases ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
DBKL said while other unlicensed vendors cooperated and moved away when issued warnings, one balloon vendor refused to comply and continued to operate as usual, despite being warned twice.
“The balloon vendor became aggressive when a third warning was issued, resulting in a physical altercation when he pushed an enforcement officer who was carrying out his duty.
“To prevent the situation from escalating, plain clothes enforcement officers acted swiftly to defuse the situation and prevent the vendor from continuing to assault the enforcement officers.
“However, it became worse when several other vendors tried to intervene. Fortunately, the situation was successfully controlled shortly after. No injuries were reported in the incident,” it said, adding that the officers involved have lodged a police report.
DBKL stressed that the vendor’s race was not a factor in the incident, adding that its enforcement officers take action based on existing regulations.
It also reminded the public that strict action would be taken against anyone conducting business without a valid licence in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier today, a political aide to Anwar Ibrahim condemned DBKL’s enforcement officers who were involved in the scuffle, which was caught on camera in a video that has now gone viral. - FMT
