PETALING JAYA: Police have warned the public of an investment advertisement on Facebook featuring tech billionaire Elon Musk and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, believed to be a scam targeting Malaysians.
Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department director Ramli Yoosuf said that fraudsters often use social media advertisements and manipulate videos of prominent figures to lure victims.
He said the scheme, purportedly introduced by Musk, claims that individuals can invest as little as RM1,200 and earn up to RM100,000 a month in returns.
The advertisement, which includes a video resembling a news report, also claims that the investment scheme has been approved by the government.
The video features both Musk and Kok purportedly discussing the benefits of the scheme, Sinar Harian reported.
“However, we are confident that the footage of both individuals is fake and was generated using ‘deepfake’ technology to deceive potential victims.
“Further checks revealed that the link provided in the advertisement redirects users to another Facebook page,” Ramli said in a statement.
He said based on information on the Facebook page, the scheme operates on a platform called “Quantum AI”.
“Interested individuals are prompted to enter their name, email, and phone number, after which the scheme’s organisers will contact them for further steps,” he said. - FMT
