Teresa Kok Stunned As Macc Remands Former Staff

Seputeh member of Parliament Teresa Kok said she was “stunned” to find out that her former staff were called in for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on March 6. - NSTP FILE PICKUALA LUMPUR: Two former staff members of Seputeh member of Parliament Teresa Kok were summoned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) allegedly over a speech she delivered in Parliament last year.
Kok said she was "stunned" to find out that her former staff, Edmund Teoh Keng Yaik and Ng Yoot Kuen, were called in for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on March 6.
She added that Teoh has been remanded until Sunday.
The speech in question, delivered in Parliament on Nov 14 2024, showed Kok raising concerns about the Federal Territory Education Department's procurement of smartboards.
"This speech, which was part of my duty to hold the government accountable, was published in full on my social media platforms for transparency and public record," she said in her statement on Facebook.
Kok said that her remarks were not targeted at any individual or department but were meant to highlight the disparity in the procurement of smartboards.
She added that she has no knowledge or involvement in the MACC's decision to detain Teoh and that it was beyond her control.
She, however, found being blamed by certain members of her party and the families of her former staff for the MACC's actions deeply regrettable and disheartening.
"I want to be unequivocally clear: the MACC is an independent body, and its investigation is being carried out without interference," she said.
"The decisions and actions of the MACC are theirs alone to make, and no one, including myself, has any power or influence over them."
Kok asked all parties to refrain from engaging in baseless speculation or making unfounded accusations and to allow the investigative process to proceed without obstruction.
"It is essential that we respect the rule of law and give the authorities the space they need to carry out their work impartially and thoroughly," she said. - NST
