Cops Probing Nazri For Sedition Over Semenyih Speech
SEMENYIH POLLS | BN secretary-general Nazri Abdul Aziz is being investigated for sedition in relation to a recent speech during the Semenyih by-election campaign, inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed today.
“We are investigating him (Nazri) under the Sedition Act 1948 and we will complete our investigation papers as soon as possible
“When they are complete, we will hand them to the deputy public prosecutor for further action or instruction,” he told a press conference after attending the Federal Reserve Unit’s 63rd anniversary celebrations in Cheras today
Specifically, the Umno lawmaker is being probed under Section 4(1) of the act, which criminalises attempts to commit seditious acts or utter seditious words
The legal definition of “seditious tendency” include attempts to promote hostility between ethnic groups, and to question certain constitutionally protected rights.
First-time convicted offenders are subject to a fine of not more than RM5,000 or three years in prison, or both
Fuzi added that one police report had been lodged against Nazri thus far
While stumping for BN in Semenyih on Saturday night, he had said that only Malays should hold the positions of attorney-general, chief justice and finance minister in order to uphold the Federal Constitution and Islam
He had cited the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim as an apparent example of how appointing non-Malays to such positions was, according to him, detrimental to the community
Nazri also said that the present attorney-general (Tommy Thomas), chief justice (Richard Malanjum) and finance minister (Lim Guan Eng) could not be trusted, as they did not swear upon the Quran when they took their oath of office
Yesterday, the former minister told the press that the police had taken his statement after a report was lodged against him
Nazri defended what he had said, maintaining that his statements reflected grassroots sentiment against the Pakatan Harapan government, and thus could not be considered seditious
BN coalition member MCA had called out Nazri for “attacking non-Malays” through his speech, and urged the police to probe him for sedition. - Mkini
