Police also seized a loud hailer from the group, which was led by Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis), half an hour after they began their protest outside the university’s main gate
They also stopped the students’ attempt to march into the university grounds
The situation became tense after a student from the association’s women’s wing, Maizatul Afirah Ayub, was arrested and taken to the police station
“Initially, police told us that Maizatul was arrested for not possessing her MyKad,” Gamis’ president, Muhammad Ikhwan Nasyriq Salahin, said
“But when she produced her MyKad, the police insisted on taking her to the station and told us that we did not have a permit for the gathering.”Earlier, during a speech, Ikhwan alleged that the University of Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany), the association which Wong Yan Ke, who had carried out the lone protest, use to head, was linked to the DAP
Ikhwan also challenged Wong to face the group
Wong sparked controversy when he carried a placard on stage after he received his scroll to protest against Rahim, saying he had shamed the university when it co-organised the Malay Dignity Congress on Oct 6
The congress made headlines after chief organiser Zainal Kling questioned the citizenship of non-Malays. - FMT
