Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has called on the police to take immediate action to assist a single mother seeking help to reunite with her three children.
The children are allegedly being held by a woman preacher attached to an NGO for Muslim converts in Tasek Gelugor, Penang.
"I understand that efforts are being made by the mother for the return of her children and that the police will be going to Perlis for the said purpose in the very near future, which is commendable.
"It must be emphasised, however, that the police may be in contempt of the said court order if it fails to adhere to the same by providing the necessary assistance to Loh Siew Hong, which is certainly unnecessary and ought to be avoided," he said in a statement.
Ramkarpal said that in granting Loh sole guardianship and custody of her children, the Kuala Lumpur High Court had ordered the police to take the necessary steps against her ex-husband or any other party to unite Loh with her children.
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh"If the children are in the care of religious authorities in Perlis as alleged, there is no doubt that they must be allowed to return to their mother by virtue of the said court order and any refusal to allow this would entitle the police to enter such premises to secure the release of the said children," he said.
Ramkarpal called on the inspector-general of police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani to ensure immediate action was taken to secure the release of the children to be united with their mother.
A futile search
On Saturday, 34-year-old Loh lodged a police report to seek the return of her three children.
Loh, in her police report, said she had been separated from her husband since March 2019 and was subsequently estranged from her children - a pair of 14-year-old twins and a 10-year-old.
Loh Siew HongAfter the couple's divorce, Loh said the High Court in Kuala Lumpur had in March last year granted her sole custody to the three children, and she spent nine months in a futile search before turning to the police at Bukit Aman.
She received a message on Facebook from a woman claiming to have her children.
After futile attempts to regain her children, the woman had called her with instructions for her to travel to Perlis alone on Feb 12 if she wished to see her children.
When contacted, Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Mohd Radzi Ahmad confirmed receiving the report lodged by Loh.
Meanwhile, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) helping Loh claimed yesterday that they were informed the police would be heading to Perlis today to recover Loh's children.
"We will wait and see what will happen tomorrow. We will also prepare for court action if actions are not taken to reunite Loh with her children," Malaysian Tamilar Kural spokesperson David Marshel was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today. - Mkini
