Clean Walkways In Sabah Sparks Debate On Civic Culture

SABAHAN’S are known for many things. Coming from a diverse crowd, they have always been known for being kind and friendly.
That fact alongside the many delectable traditional meals in Sabah makes it one of the hot spots for tourism in Malaysia.
But a recent post by a netizen on X suggests that Sabahans are also civic minded. “Why there are no bikes or cars parked on this walk path? Either DBKK has done a good job or Sabahan are good people, or both. We need this in our cities,” said @bettersidewalk1.
True or false? Regardless, the topic brought about a good deal of feedback and stereotypes being slung around by our fellow netizens which makes for a hilarious discussion.
It started off with a positive note with @donamirhadi stating that excellent enforcement builds excellent people. Then there was @axesmill123 pointing out that Sabahans don’t rely as much on motorcycles as the people in KL, preferring to use “Hailka” instead.
Those not familiar with the term Hailak will realise that it is a pickup, which is a colloquial name for Hilux.

“Sabahan rarely ride bikes. Usually bikers are peninsular people working in Sabah,” added @fatboycanrun. “Once u park a bike there, consider its gone,” said @VanGies0n.
A sceptical @cliques_cliches further commented that the topic starter should have gone to Pasar Filipina at night if he wanted to know whether the local authorities have been doing a good job.
“Our salary is low, boss. If we get fined one time, we really feel it in our pockets,” lamented @currie160. It appears there is more to the story than just Sabahans being mindful of the law of the land.

But why hear it from someone else when we can experience all the pain and pleasure Sabah has to offer by taking a plane down there? Sabah has always been an amazing tourist destination and there is no better time than now. — Focus Malaysia
