Civil Servants Pay Hike Not A Campaign Ploy For Kkb By Election Says Saifuddin
Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail says the announcement on the 13% salary revision for civil servants was purposely timed for Labour Day. (Bernama pic)HULU SELANGOR: Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has denied claims that the pay rise announcement for civil servants is a campaign tactic for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
Saifuddin said the unity government had begun revising the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) some time ago, but only decided to announce it in conjunction with Labour Day on May 1.
“If looked at from the timing of the announcement (on May 1), their question will be answered,” he said after attending a Hari Raya event at the Kuala Kubu Baharu Police Academy today.
He was responding to Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who said the pay raise announcement would not sway voters in the May 11 by-election.
On Wednesday, Anwar announced a salary hike of more than 13%, including a minimum pay of RM2,000, for civil servants under the SSPA, effective from December 2024, with an allocation budget of RM10 billion.
Saifuddin also challenged Wan Fayhsal, the Machang MP, to clarify Perikatan Nasional’s stand on whether it supports or opposes the salary adjustment for civil servants.
The by-election will see a four-cornered fight among Pakatan Harapan, PN, Parti Rakyat Malaysia and an independent candidate.
DAP’s Pang Sock Tao will face PN’s Hulu Selangor Bersatu acting chief Khairul Azhari Saut, PRM’s Hafizah Zainuddin and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin.
The seat fell vacant following the death of three-term DAP assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong on March 21 from cancer. - FMT
