Chinese People Shouldn T Fear Pas Says Ex Mca Man
Lee Hwa Beng said MCA has worked with PAS before, but not openly as it is ‘taboo for most Chinese-based parties, including DAP’.
PETALING JAYA: Former MCA member Lee Hwa Beng says Chinese people should not give in to DAP’s fear-mongering tactics against PAS.
Speaking on an episode of former law minister Zaid Ibrahim’s podcast, Lee said PAS had been unfairly demonised among the Chinese community, adding that forming an alliance with it is more strategic in the current political landscape.
“We are living in a Malay-majority (nation). We are in the minority. We shouldn’t fear PAS.
“As long as we fear PAS, we cannot have a good life (in Malaysia),” said the former Subang Jaya assemblyman and Port Klang Authority chairman.
Zaid had previously said PAS is now in favour with Malay voters, having replaced Umno as the leading party.
“Why can’t MCA be closer to PAS? For 40 years, you were close to Umno because Umno was the leader of the Malays. It made sense then.
“But today the leader of the Malays is PAS. Why can’t MCA go and win over the Malays together with PAS?”
However, Lee said MCA had worked with PAS before, but not openly as it is “taboo for most Chinese-based parties, including DAP”.
Zaid attributed this taboo to “DAP propaganda” and dismissed the notion that PAS wants to Islamise the nation.
“PAS wants to be more Islamic towards the Muslims. I don’t think PAS wants to Islamise the Chinese.
“They may not be liberal or so open, but this is because they want to protect the Muslims.
“They’re not interested in Islamising you,” he said, referring to the non-Muslims. - FMT
