Pas Reluctant To Push Snap Polls Narrative Says Leader
PAS is not gearing up for elections this year, a leader told FMT on condition of anonymity, but said the party’s election machinery is “ever ready” to spring into action.
PETALING JAYA: PAS, unlike its ally Bersatu, is not keen on peddling the narrative that the country will see a snap election before year-end, a party leader said.
The leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, told FMT that the party has yet to mobilise its election machinery, even as Bersatu appears to be preparing for nationwide polls.
“For the time being, PAS and Bersatu appear to be working independently— one in the east, and the other the west.
“PAS is not too hyped up (by suggestions of an imminent general election). Still, our machinery is ever ready,” the source said, adding that no discussions have taken place between leaders of the two parties on the opposition coalition’s prime ministerial candidate.
The source also said no concrete decisions were made at a recent meeting between the principal leaders of the two parties attended by Muhyiddin Yassin, the Perikatan Nasional chairman, and his deputy, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
FMT has reached out to PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and the party’s information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari for comment.
The current government’s term ends in 2027.
Last week Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali revealed that Muhyiddin, the Bersatu president, had at the party’s Supreme Council meeting instructed that the election machinery be activated in anticipation of a snap election being called later this year.
According to Azmin the “encouraging development” was discussed at a meeting between Hadi and Muhyiddin on Feb 5.
Separately, a Bersatu leader, who also did not wish to be named, said only a handful of party leaders do not believe a snap election is on the horizon, However, he acknowledged that there was nothing to suggest one would be called anytime soon.
“It would be difficult, unless there is a confidence vote against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.” Still, the party’s machinery was always prepared for the unexpected, the leader said.
The source also revealed that not all leaders attended the meeting between Azmin, Hadi and Muhyiddin.
“All policy decisions especially on crucial matters need to be made at a meeting attended by the top leaders of every party in PN,” the source said. - FMT
