Caning Students Into Order Won T Help Solve Bullying
YOURSAY | ‘Find the root cause and start from there.’
Bersatu MP wants caning brought back to schools
Elaine Morais: A big "no" to caning and any other forms of corporal punishment, as proposed by Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid.
People who resort to such punitive measures lack compassion, wisdom, patience and an imagination creative enough to come up with a thousand other ways to transform the lives of young people in positive ways.
Hitting another person, especially someone less powerful than you, is a form of violence that robs them of their dignity as a human being.
ADSA forceful response can only be justified as a form of self-defence.
Helen Prejean dedicated her book against capital punishment, "Dead Man Walking", to her parents, who she said " loved her into life".
That should give us some insight into why young people resort to violence against others - the absence of an enduring love in their lives as they were growing up with few "significant others " who cared sufficiently for them.
Such an upbringing would have allowed them to develop positive self-esteem and an ability to use words, verbalise, and resolve problems openly and peacefully.
So more attention could be paid to providing children with a nurturing environment with mature and caring adults and peers, and activities that will draw out their abilities and foster skills to enable them to survive and even thrive in the imperfect world we live in.
Andersonian: I was caned once in class because I couldn't keep quiet. The class monitor asked me to stand in a corner, so I would be separated from others to keep quiet.
Little did I know our discipline master was going rounds. He didn't say much, asked me to bend a bit and gave me a whack in the buttocks.
I still made noise after that, but I was much more alert to our class monitor's presence. It's a lifetime experience I cherish.
Caning to solve bullying, criminal actions won't help. They know they won't be caned even in prison, due to age.
They continue doing wrong because of the returns, like money and favours. Punishment is only a short-term deterrent. You need to find the root cause and start from there.
Cyclonus: Rosol’s suggestion is another example of the opposition’s intellectual prowess. Imagine the damage they can do if running a country.
ADSThe cause of bullying amongst children is psychological. And it could even stem from a bad upbringing.
So, the parents, guardians, and schools need to be educated as well.
Behavioural modifiers and civilised consequences should be meted out as well, not barbaric, outdated physical punishment.
Beman: Rosol wants students to be caned just because he was caned when he was a student.
I wonder if the caning really makes him a better person. Only he can tell if he honestly reflects on his life.
From my own experience as a student around the second half of the last century, I would say that some of the teachers should not be allowed to hold a cane at all.
KK Voter: On the same day, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Azalina Othman Said, said they are studying the abolition of mandatory caning for convicted criminals, this MP calls for the return of caning for kids.
Or maybe we should introduce mandatory caning for MPs who provoke 2R issues instead.
IndigoHamster4797: I feel we should agree to this proposal from Rosol. The Chinese schools, which have better performance than national schools, maintain their disciplinary rigour.
There are no bullying, sexual harassment, or gangsterism cases in Chinese schools.
One of their best practices is that teachers can still mete out disciplinary measures.
We need to raise a more egalitarian society, and I found the strict discipline of Chinese schools is one of the answers.
Moneycrazy: I totally agree with Rosol’s suggestion. Nowadays, discipline in school has gone to the dogs.
It has now become "Spared the rod and spoiled the child”.
Parents, one and all, should allow the school to discipline your child. In time to come, it is good for you.
GrayParrot9290: I disagree. It’s an archaic thinking. Get into the mindset of the younger generation on how they are influenced and what mediums of communication to use.
The stick approach is likely to work and will probably make it worse. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek is still clueless. Sack her!
Koel: Allow sound academics to make decisions.
Politicians have done enough harm to the country and its education.
Kindly enable learned voices to prevail in all matters relating to education, including and especially its discipline. - Mkini
