Cameron Highlands Council Demolishes Santorini Inspired Attraction

The Cameron Highlands District Council (CHDC) demolished an illegal Santorini-inspired tourist attraction yesterday because it did not get approval from the authorities.
According to a post on its Facebook page, the CHDC said the enforcement action carried out against Cameron Santorini was done in accordance with Section 70 (1) Construction without Approval under Act 133 of the Roads, Drains and Buildings Act 1974.
The council confirmed that its president Azmil Hadid Maznan led the operation from 9am to 11.30am.
The personnel from the Cameron Highlands District and Land Office, the Royal Malaysia Police, the Pahang State Enforcement Unit, the Cameron Highlands District Public Works Department and Tenaga Nasional Berhad also participated.
"It is hoped that this enforcement action will serve as a warning and reminder to any party that intends to implement a development project to fully comply with the current related procedures and regulations," according to the statement.
It is understood that the place was only opened last April and attracted many tourists, especially from abroad. The ticket price is RM40 for adults and RM20 for children aged between five and 12 years.
Royal warning
Last week, Pahang ruler Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah warned against the “colonisation” of state lands.
“Driven by greed and the pursuit of profit, we are willing to sacrifice our integrity and allow our land to be exploited by those who do not own it.
“Moreover, it is even more disappointing that these foreigners have taken on the role of ‘tauke’, controlling the supply and prices in the agricultural industry, leading to the emergence of cartels that harm the state’s and the country’s economy as a whole,” he said at an investiture ceremony held in conjunction with his 65th birthday in Kuantan.
The sultan noted that lands in Cameron Highlands, which in the past were leased to local farmers and entrepreneurs, are now being rented to foreigners.
Stressing that he would not compromise on such issues, His Highness urged the state government to take the appropriate action.

“Fulfil the trust given with full integrity and remember that every action and responsibility will be accounted for later,” he said.
Sultan Abdullah, who urged the people to assist the authorities in providing information regarding crimes and misconduct, also urged the state government to review the development plans for Cameron Highlands especially regarding future developments. - Mkini
