Bumi Contractors Tend To Abscond With Deposits So Even Malays Suggest Opt For Type C Contractors

EVERYTHING in Malaysia is seemingly linked to one’s ethnicity – this even extends to trustworthiness and how well a person is able to do a job.
This perception was highlighted by netizens in their comments pertaining to a Malay couple who was scammed by an unscrupulous husband & wife contractor.
Posting on X, the wife Farah Farzana (@farahfrzna) claimed that she and her husband had been swindled of RM30,000 – this being the deposit paid to Artami Home Design for renovation works of their Bandar Gamuda Cove home in Banting, Selangor.

Alas, the contractor who scammed them is believed have absconded although the couple claimed that they are even willing to allow the former to re-pay in instalments.
Towards this end, a police report has since been lodged against the Artemi Home Design since neither the husband nor wife had responded to the settlement offer.

The victim further contended that it was not a case of “blindly handing over the cash to the contractor” as due process was followed.

A lawyer has since been engaged to pursue this matter.

The poster even admitted that she is purposely making this case go viral with the hope that others don’t get scammed by the unscrupulous contractor couple.

Many netizens who sympathised with the poster highlighted that the mistake they made was hiring a Malay contractor!

One commenter spoke from experience that Malay contractors had no capital and would roll available funds while taking on too many jobs. In the end, they would flee as they could not sustain the work load and the tight cash flow.

More pertinently, quite a number counselled that the couple should have engaged “Type C”  (slang referring to the Chinese) contractors who are said to have a better track record in this line of work.

One further added that though Chinese contractors’ charges were steep, it was a price worth paying for peace of mind.

Another cautioned against hiring contractors who are foreign nationals as they will be impossible to trace if anything goes awry.

Without specifying ethnicity, one reckoned that what the poster has gone through was rife in the construction industry regardless if the contractor is a neighbour or even a relative.

Such incidents have been rife on social media, not least with popular foodie personality Datuk Redzuawan Ismail (a.k.a. Chef Wan) who was also a victim of unscrupulous Malay contractors. He lamented that this is what happens when one wants to help one’s own kind.

While it may be unfair to tar all Malay contractors with the same brush, one netizen made a very pertinent point about the type of criminals this industry attracts given the large amounts of cash involved.
