Bersatu Party Machinery Is United Ready For Semenyih By Election Says Muhyiddin
(TheStar) – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin dismissed talk that the issues the party has been facing recently would weaken its chances in the Semenyih by-election.
The by-election was called following the death of assemblyman Bakhtiar Mohd Nor (Bersatu).
“There are no big issues, we have explained there are no issues with the leadership.
“For me, most importantly, is that our machinery is united,” he said at a press conference in EcoVenture Resort and Recreation near here on Saturday (Feb 9).
Muhyiddin, however, expressed confidence that Bersatu is ready to face the upcoming by-election, and that the party has looked into issues plaguing the local community, namely floods and the congestion at health clinics and Hospital Kajang.
He also said that although the Umno-PAS alliance succeeded in the recent Cameron Highlands by-election, that may not necessarily be the case in Semenyih even though this by-election will similarly be a multi-cornered fight.
In addition to Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Parti Sosialis Malaysia, Gerakan is considering throwing its hat into the ring.
Social activist Kuan Chee Heng, who is known for his charity work will also stand as an independent candidate.
On the matter of a Semenyih voter filing a court injunction to halt the by-election, Muhyiddin said he will leave it to the courts.
The voter had challenged the validity of the by-election on the basis that the Election Commission is currently only run by its chairman Azhar Azizan Harun, claiming that this renders the EC nonexistent in accordance with the Federal Constitution. Six EC members resigned effective Jan 1, 2019, and the posts remain vacant.
