Bersatu Leader Denies 4 More State Reps Set To Back Selangor Mb
Following a shift in support by Selat Klang representative Abdul Rashid Asari, Bersatu supreme council member Dr Afif Bahardin has dismissed a rumour that four more Selangor assemblypersons will pledge their support for Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
According to Sinar Harian, the Taman Medan assemblyperson said it was an unfounded claim by certain quarters to create discontent among Bersatu members.
“They (Pakatan Harapan) formed their own perception,” Afif (above) told the Malay daily.
Harapan Daily reported that five assemblypersons claimed they were bullied by the state’s Bersatu chief, Azmin Ali, and have decided to abandon ship because of that.
The coalition mouthpiece also reported that four Bersatu assemblypersons will follow in Rashid’s footsteps in supporting the Selangor administration.
They are Jeram assemblyperson Harrison Hassan, Muhammad Muhaimin Harith Abdullah Sani (Batang Kali), Wan Dzahanurin Ahmad (Sungai Kandis) and Jamil Salleh (Dengkil).
No compulsion
In making his announcement earlier, Rashid cited several reasons that led him to pledge support for Amirudin’s administration.
“I voluntarily made this decision without any compulsion, after scrutinising the speech by Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who praised the Selangor government for being on the right track in the state’s and rakyat’s progress.
“This move is also due to Perikatan Nasional’s silence, particularly that of the state chapter on accusations thrown against the Malay rulers. This is against the principles of Malay-Muslims,” he said.
Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid AsariRashid served as the Selangor Bersatu chief from September 2020 until January this year, before being replaced by Azmin.
He claimed that he also made the decision for the well-being of his constituents, who would benefit from a stable and strong state government.
With the declaration, Rashid has joined the list of Bersatu representatives who have voiced support for the government of the day in recent months.
Previously, six MPs from the party backed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, without leaving Bersatu.
They are Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).
Bersatu introduced an amendment to its party constitution last week, aimed at preventing future “defections” of its elected representatives.
The Selangor assembly has 56 seats, 22 of which belong to the PN opposition coalition of PAS and Bersatu.
