Batu Caves Temple Makes Last Ditch Bid To Revise Thaipusam Sops
Devotees bearing milk pots (paal kudam) approaching the Batu Caves Sri Subramaniar temple today.PETALING JAYA: With just two days to go for Thaipusam, the Batu Caves Sri Subramaniar temple committee has urged the government to urgently reconsider three conditions in the SOPs issued by the National Security Council (MKN).
Its chairman, R Nadarajah, said the committee had appealed in writing to the government on Wednesday and was still awaiting its response.
The temple’s requests are to allow:
The temple to be open for 24 hours from the eve of Thaipusam till the next day. Currently, it can only open from 5am-11pm on both days; One person to accompany paal kudam (milk pot) bearers as some are old and need help; and,Those below 18 to take part in the prayers.Nadarajah said more than 90,000 devotees had registered to attend prayers at the temple so far and it would be impossible to cater to all of them under the current SOPs.
“We can’t chase them away. The times and attendance limits set by MKN are not acceptable.
Temple committee chairman R Nadarajah.“As for children, parents have made vows to shave their heads bald or carry them in sugar-cane kavadis, which can only be fulfilled with their presence,” he told FMT when contacted today.
He hoped that MKN will make a decision on its request as soon as possible as the devotees were expected to flood Batu Caves from tomorrow.
Last week, national unity minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique said only 6,000 devotees would be allowed each day on Jan 16, Jan 17 and Jan 19. As for Thaipusam day (Jan 18), the authorities have allowed only 9,000 people to attend.
Normally, hundreds of thousands of devotees turn up for Thaipusam at Batu Caves.
Halimah said there would be 12 prayer sessions in the temple on Jan 17 from 5am to 5pm, with 500 devotees allowed in the temple during each session. These sessions will last for 30 minutes, with another 30 minutes for sanitisation before the next group is allowed in.
As for Thaipusam day on Tuesday, the temple will be open from 5am to 11pm, with 18 prayer sessions allowed with the same number of devotees each time. - FMT
