Bar Agm 2022 To Discuss Proposed Political Funding Law

The issue of a proposed law for political funding and conduct of lawmakers is expected to be raised at the Bar Council's annual general meeting (AGM) tomorrow.
The AGM is also going to look into a motion regarding the check and balance mechanism of the MACC.
When contacted today, former Bar Council president Salim Bashir confirmed these as among the motions that would be looked into during the annual meeting.
He added that the motion was put forward by lawyer Charles Hector Fernandez.
Checks on the Bar Council's website showed that the AGM is set to discuss Fernandez's motion titled 'Motion for Conduct, Discipline and Political Funding Laws that Cover the Cabinet, Members of Parliament, Senators, etc' dated March 11.
The council's web portal listed the lawyer's other motion for discussion tomorrow, namely 'Motion on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Its Check and Balance Mechanisms.
The Bar website also listed a motion by lawyer Cassandra Chung titled 'Motion to Implement a Ruling on Remuneration for Pupils and Seek Legal Determination on Its Validity'.
The AGM, to be held tomorrow morning, will be conducted from the Bar Council headquarters at Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
According to a media invite issued yesterday, the Bar will hold a press conference at 2pm after the AGM.
In October 2019, then minister in the Prime Minister's Department Liew Vui Keong said the government would table the Political Funding Bill.
The bill seeks to focus on the regulatory aspect of political contributions, which is important in efforts to stamp out corruption and create a corruption-free ecosystem based on the principles of transparency, accountability and integrity.
On Jan 16 this year, economist Edmund Terence Gomez, who is a former member of MACC's Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel, said that members of the MACC Anti-Corruption Advisory Board should resign and be held accountable over the issue involving the antigraft agency chief Azam Baki's ownership of shares.
As far back as two years ago, a group of young lawyers handed a petition to the Bar to raise the minimum pay of pupils undergoing chambering with law firms. - Mkini
