(Azalina Othman Said Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said has called for an anti-hopping law in Melaka, which has seen the government fall twice since the last general election due to party-hoppers.
The former Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker said an anti-hopping law in the state was among the topics on the table during her meeting with Melaka governor Mohd Ali Rustam.
She suggested that any assemblymen who quit his party should be automatically expelled from the assembly or that voters be allowed to file a petition to have an assemblyman removed if he switches parties.
Stating that an anti-hopping law would uphold the democratic system in Malaysia as well as maintain the country’s political and economic stability, Azalina also said she was confident that the law would effectively prevent elected representatives from jumping parties.
“In this regard, I also humbly expressed my intention to propose that an anti-hopping and political accountability law be implemented at the Melaka state level with the consideration and consent of His Excellency,” she said in a statement today.
“I have also offered my services if needed to enact this enactment at the Melaka state level,” said Azalina who hoped the law could be enacted after the state election this month.
The tabling of an anti-hopping law was among the proposals in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that Pakatan Harapan signed with the federal government in September.
Melaka is set for a state election on Nov 20, with nominations set for Nov 8.
The election came about after Ali dissolved the state assembly on Oct 5 after four state assemblymen said they had retracted support for chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.
The four are former chief minister Idris Haron (Sungai Udang), former DAP man Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu), Bersatu’s Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Umno’s Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor).
Idris and Nor Azman have been sacked by Umno, while Noor Effandi has been given his marching orders by Bersatu. - FMT
