Apandi Ex Federal Court Judge Coaxed Me To Arrest Then Pm Najib
Former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has alleged that former federal court judge Gopal Sri Ram had tried to coax him to play a role to arrest then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak
In his Facebook posting today, Apandi (above) claimed that Sri Ram had approached him at his house in January 2018 under the instruction of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad
Apandi said that Sri Ram, accompanied by a "young Chinese lawyer", had visited him at his house under the pretext of getting his help on a certain matter
Apandi claimed that Sri Ram (photo) had then admitted that it was only an excuse to see him and that he had a “bigger agenda at hand”
“(Sri Ram purportedly said:) Tun M (Mahathir) sent me to see you.
"(Sri Ram also allegedly said:) He wants you to arrest Najib at his office, you go tomorrow at 2pm, we have arranged for the police in Putrajaya to do what is necessary under your instructions
“We have also arranged for a magistrate to issue the remand order when he is brought before him or her.”Apandi claimed that Sri Ram told him that he would be a “hero in the eyes of the people" as well as being the "first attorney-general to arrest a sitting prime minister"
He further claimed that he had asked on what grounds Najib was supposed to be arrested
"(Sri Ram allegedly said): Brother, people out there are frustrated and unhappy, the fact that you arrest him, never mind the reason, will make people happy.”Apandi further claimed to have evidence in the form of a CCTV recording as well as eyewitnesses in relation to the alleged incident. The alleged incident took place four months before BN was defeated in the 14th general election and Pakatan Harapan won the historic polls to become the then-new government
Malaysiakini is trying to reach Sri Ram for his response
Najib (photo) had been linked to alleged money laundering pertaining to 1MDB funds
After the BN government was toppled in the 14th general election, he was investigated and subsequently charged with 25 counts of abuse of power and money laundering in relation to RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds
The Pekan MP was also charged with seven counts of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering of RM42 million of funds from SRC International, among other charges
The trial against him for allegedly pocketing the funds from SRC International Sdn Bhd will conclude next month. - Mkini
