Anwar Lost Out Even With Pejuang S Support Mahathir Reveals
Dr Mahathir Mohamad said all four Pejuang MPs had signed statutory declarations supporting Anwar Ibrahim but he still failed to get the numbers. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim failed to get sufficient numbers to be endorsed as the next prime minister even with the full support of Pejuang, the party’s chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed.
The former prime minister told The Malaysian Insight that the party’s MPs had signed statutory declarations (SDs) backing Anwar with hopes that the PKR leader would get enough support.
“There are only four MPs in Pejuang and we signed the SD to support him. But he didn’t get it,” he was quoted by the portal as saying.
Just two days ago, Mahathir said he would have no complaints if Anwar succeeded Muhyiddin Yassin and that he had no problems working with his former protege.
Last month, Mahathir claimed he had wanted to give the premiership to Anwar but was denied by Muhyiddin.
Mahathir also told TMI that he believes Anwar will not give up pursuing the coveted post.
“Anwar is a person who will fight until the end. It won’t be long before Anwar comes with more supporters than Ismail Sabri.”
When asked to comment on Ismail’s leadership, Mahathir said the Bera MP was inexperienced.
The Langkawi MP however said Pejuang would support Ismail if he sets up the National Recovery Council.
“That (NRC), we will support. But if he wants to table policies (in Parliament), we have to see what they are first.
“We cannot simply say that we outright support him.”
Ismail was named the country’s ninth prime minister this evening, succeeding Muhyiddin who resigned from the post on Monday. - FMT
