Anwar I Went Through Hell In Prison But Won T Treat Najib That Way
Prime Minister Anwar has recalled his own time in prison to defend the eased jail conditions for former premier Najib Abdul Razak who has been found guilty of corruption in the RM42 million SRC International case.
Speaking to UK-based Financial Times while on an official visit to London, Anwar reportedly said he does not wish for Najib to suffer in prison like he did.
“I went through that hell also, and solitary confinement. I wasn’t given any outside food except for the prison food.
“But do I need then to treat Najib in the same manner? I say no, I mean, he was prime minister,” he said in the interview.
‘Butterscotch pudding’
Najib, 71, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
Najib had filed a petition for a royal pardon on Sept 2, 2022, which led to the Pardons Board’s decision to reduce his prison sentence from 12 years to six years and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Unlike Anwar, the former Pekan MP has been permitted to request and receive outside food.
In July last year, Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, royal consort to then Yang di-Pertuan Agong, had posted an image of a butterscotch pudding which she made on Najib’s request for his favourite dessert.
No forgiveness for corruption
Anwar also stressed that he would not forgive any allegations of corruption in Malaysia under his predecessors.
He also reiterated his accusations against former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, claiming that his predecessor had allowed his mistreatment in prison.
“I was assaulted and near death. I’ve forgiven, I want to move on,” said Anwar whose two separate stints in prison totalled nearly a decade following his convictions in 1999 and 2015.
“But steal from the public purse - billions - [and] I’ve no authority to forgive you. You give back the funds,” he added. - Mkini
