Anwar Condemns Israel Over Gaza Flotilla Interception
The prime minister says Malaysia will use 'all legitimate and lawful means' to hold Israel accountable and protect its citizens.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Israel’s interception of the Gaza-bound flotilla showed ‘utter contempt for the rights of the Palestinian people and the conscience of the world’.PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) which had been carrying unarmed civilians and humanitarian aid bound for Gaza
Anwar said the flotilla symbolised “solidarity, compassion and the hope of relief” for Palestinians under blockade, but was met with “intimidation and coercion”.
“By blocking a humanitarian mission, Israel has shown utter contempt not only for the rights of the Palestinian people but also for the conscience of the world,” he said in a strongly worded Facebook post.
Anwar also vowed that Malaysia would pursue “all legitimate and lawful means” to hold Israel accountable, particularly in cases involving Malaysian citizens.
“The safety and dignity of our people are paramount, and we will not allow them to be compromised with impunity,” he said.
The Sumud Nusantara Command Centre said it had lost contact with 17 out of 23 Malaysians on the convoy after Israeli forces boarded several GSF ships in the Mediterranean Sea.
At least eight Malaysian activists, including singer Zizi Kirana, are confirmed to have been arrested. The status of the others remains unknown.
Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed that several GSF ships had been stopped and their passengers taken to an Israeli port. - FMT
