Amanah Youth To Mobilise 1k Plus Members For Tangkapazambaki Demo
Amanah Youth will mobilise more than 1,000 of its members to participate in the upcoming demonstration this Saturday to urge authorities to take action against MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki.
They will also prepare around 10 to 20 lawyers on the day of the demonstration as observers.
“Amanah Youth and its lawyers fully support the peaceful demonstration #TangkapAzamBaki that will be held this Saturday (Jan 22) at Sogo, organised by a group of youths.“We have not only stated our commitment to mobilise as many Amanah Youth members to Sogo but we will also commit to preparing at least 10 lawyers on that day.
“The lawyers will be observers and ensure that nothing happens that goes against the law so that this peaceful demonstration can take place in an orderly manner in line with the set standard operating procedures (SOPs),” said Amanah Youth lawyer Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda in a press conference at the Amanah headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Also in attendance at the press conference were Amanah Youth vice-chief Zubair Rahim, its mobilisation director Abbas Azmi, as well as the economy bureau director Ammar Atan.
He noted that there have already been intimidation attempts against some who have shared on social media posters related to the demonstration, such as in the case of activist Adam Adli who has been called in for police questioning this Thursday.
As such, he said the Amanah Youth lawyers are also offering their services pro bono to not only the organiser but anyone who uploaded the posters related to the #TangkapAzamBaki demonstration.
They also urge for such intimidation to end immediately.
Azam BakiYesterday, the police said they have not received any application to hold a rally in Dataran Merdeka.
He also warned that holding a rally will be in violation of the current SOPs to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fadhli stressed today that the right to freedom of assembly is enshrined under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.
As such, he urged youths not to be intimidated and to attend the rally en masse this Saturday.
Several days ago, a poster calling for the rakyat to join the protest started going viral on social media.
The identity of its organiser remains unclear, but the poster had been shared by many including some politicians.
While the location of the demonstration was initially kept under wraps, it has since been revealed that it will be held at Sogo in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday.
Azam came under scrutiny recently after allegations surfaced about him having owned shares in two companies back in 2015.
According to Excel Force Bhd’s 2015 annual report, Azam owned 2,156,000 warrants in the company as of March 21, 2016. At the time, Azam was the head of MACC’s investigation division.
However, in a press conference on Jan 5, Azam said he did not do anything wrong as the shares were bought by his brother, who only used his name. - Mkini
