Amanah Youth Chief Among 3 Charged Over Protest On Rising Inflation
Three individuals were charged in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court today over their involvement in various protests last month against the rising inflation, including the Turun protest on July 23.
Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda, Batu PKR Youth division chief Muhammad Sabda Suluh Lestari Yahya and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) student union president Aliff Naif were charged under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.
Hasbie was charged under Section 9(5) of the PAA which means he can be fined up to RM10,000 if convicted.
This was over his role in Amanah’s protest against the increase in prices of goods at Kampung Baru on July 1.
About 100 people had taken part in that protest which lasted for about an hour in the afternoon after Friday prayers.
At the time, the government had just announced they were stopping the subsidies for bottled cooking oil.
Magistrate Wong Chai Sia set the bail for Hasbie at RM3,000, with the next case mention fixed on Sept 22.
Amanah Youth chief Hasbie MudaHasbie was represented by Amanah lawyers Faiz Fadzil and Fadhli Umar while deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Aris led the prosecution.
Top Amanah leaders such as its president Mohamad Sabu, deputy president Salahuddin Ayub and vice-president Adly Zahari were also present at the court today for moral support.
Meanwhile, Sabda was charged in a separate courtroom for his involvement in another protest over the rising prices of goods on July 9 at the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur.
He was represented by lawyer Bryan Ng while the deputy public prosecutor in charge of the case was Mohd Radzi Shah.
Sabda’s bail was set at RM7,000 with one surety by magistrate Azahra Tun Arifin, with the next case mention on Sept 28.
Meanwhile, Aliff, who was one of the speakers at the Turun protest on July 23, was represented by lawyer Asheeq Ali. The deputy public prosecutor was Muhamad Zuraidi Zulkifli.
The bail for Aliff was set at RM3,000 with one surety by magistrate S Mageswary and the next case mention will be on Sept 21.
Over 30 individuals have been questioned by the police over the Turun demonstration so far. - Mkini
