All Eyes On The Courts Five Major Cases This Week

Two of the cases involve former prime ministers. NSTP/FILE PICKUALA LUMPUR: Five high-profile court proceedings are scheduled for this week, including the civil suit against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the inquest into Zara Qairina Mahathir's death.
The week of court proceedings begins today with the resumption of the civil suit by SRC International Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, seeking RM42 million from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The suit alleges that Najib, the former Pekan member of parliament, committed criminal breach of trust, received funds knowingly, engaged in tort of misfeasance, and misused power in relation to the misappropriation of SRC International funds.
Tomorrow, another former prime minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, will be at the High Court for a case mention for his bid to set aside four abuse of power charges involving bribes totalling RM232.5 million and three money laundering cases totalling RM200 million.
The inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir and an appeal by Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, are both set to resume on Wednesday.
In Na'imah's case, the prosecution previously appealed against the High Court's decision to allow the 68-year-old to seek a review of the Sessions Court's decision that rejected her application to refer eight legal questions regarding her failure to declare assets case.
The assets involved include two companies, Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd and Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd; two Mercedes-Benz cars; and eight properties comprising Menara Ilham, a residence in Bukit Tunku, several buildings and land lots in Taman Tunku and Bukit Tunku, Jalan Cantonment Road (Penang), and Jalan Anthinahapan, Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
Meanwhile, the inquest into Zara Qairina's death will also resume following a break.
Many witnesses have yet to testify, and there is a possibility that additional witnesses will be called by the lawyers for the interested parties. So far, eight of the 35 child witnesses have been called to give evidence.
On Thursday, the Johor Baru Sessions Court is set to hear the case mention for an unemployed man accused of being linked to an organised crime group, "Geng Jackie".
The accused, Lee Thiam Poh, previously pleaded not guilty to being a member of the gang between Jan 1, 2017, and Nov 28, 2019. - NST
