MANIMARANKUALA LUMPUR: Pannir Selvam Pranthaman wrote a poignant final letter to his lawyer and close friend, Too Xing Ji, expressing gratitude, faith, and resilience in his final days in a Singapore prison.
In a Facebook post, Too shared that Pannir had also given him a book alongside the handwritten note, describing it as one of his last acts of kindness before his execution on Oct 8.
Too said the letter, dated Oct 3, was significant enough that he decided to make it public.
Pannir urged Too to remain steadfast despite the court's ruling.
"Let's keep our heads up. The outcome may not be what we had hoped for, but it should not diminish the richness of the journey we went through — where we learned about human experiences, discovered more about who we are, what we stand for, our purpose, and the best of ourselves that we offered for the principles we believe in. This is us, not the outcome," Pannir wrote.
Too hopes that those striving to make the world a better place would find solace and strength in Pannir's words.
"What we do matters. We stand up so that others may be seen. We speak out so that others may be heard. My dear friend, you have achieved more in six years than some do in an entire lifetime. They may break your body, but your spirit shines brightly still. You live on forever in all of us," he wrote.
Pannir was convicted in 2014 for acting as a courier for 51.84g of heroin into Singapore.
His family campaigned for years to save him from execution, appealing for clemency and pointing to what they described as flaws in the sentencing system.
He was executed on Oct 8. - NST
